I’m helping out with the girls soccer team at one of the local high schools, and they just played their first game tonight. We drove over to Denver in perfect weather and arrived at the field only to find out the brand new turf field had just been finished at noon today. The girls were so excited!
The JV team was down 0-1 at halftime, and with 10 minutes left, the score was 2-2. Then, one of our first-year players followed the ball in for a 3-2 lead. The girls played tough defense for the remaining minutes and came away with the win. They were filled with excitement!
The varsity game was very similar, score-wise. Although we dominated the entire first half and despite all of the shots we took, we finished the first half with a 0-1 deficit. However, the girls’ attitudes were positive at halftime, and they came into the second half with renewed energy. With 8 minutes left, the score was tied at 2-2. One of our center midfielders sent a ball to the outside midfielder, who dribbled the ball past the defender and then made an incredible shot past the keeper for the winning goal!
As the final whistle blew, the team rushed out onto the field to congratulate our keeper. Their enthusiasm was contagious; we were all ecstatic about the win, especially after the tough season last year. Their determination and teamwork was impressive for the first game, and it made me excited for the rest of the season! The victory was sweet, indeed.
