Closing day!

Today is the day!  I close on my house this afternoon and start the process of remodeling and renovating.  The to-do list keeps growing—asbetos kit, gutters, carpet, wood laminate, paint…when I started to write it all out this weekend, it felt overwhelming.  But envisioning the effects of all of the remodeling and updating is an incredible feeling.

The dreaming began last night; we moved past the must-do list and started imagining the possibilities to truly make the house feel like a home.  An entire wall of bookcases, complete with a bookcase door.  Updating the now-avocado-green bathroom.  Taking the brick from the exterior to create an accent wall.  Adding a French door from the sunroom to the office.  Creating a game room.

It’s a delicate balance, the must-dos and the can-dos, the necessities and the possibilities.  Both important.  And at the top of the to-do list, we wrote: “Humor is essential.”

It will take lots of work.  It will take laughter.  It will take breaks.  It will take lots of episodes of The Office.  It will take time.  It will take patience.  But it will most definitely be worth it.

I am participating in the Slice of Life challenge to write and publish a post each day in March.   Thanks to Two Writing Teachers for creating a place for writers to share their work all month long and hosting the March Slice of Life Story Challenge!

  1. Congratulations!! I can picture you guys renovating from your descriptions. The Office is my go to background show, since I’ve seen every episode many times and they never get old! Have fun making it a home!!

  2. It definitely will all be worth it when you make the house your own home. We have lived in our current home for 37 years now but I still remember closing day and all the plans we made…most of them achieved, some not. Priorities. Congratulations.

  3. Woo hoo for house closings! 🙂 It’s funny you closed today as I commented on another student’s blog who had just moved. He woke up, and no idea where he was! I hope your first night in your new home is a little more peaceful! And I love your to do list! 🙂 Congratulations!
